Have you ever thought about returning to a career you will love? Or ever thought, ‘I haven’t worked in a long time, what are my career options?’
I have been asked this question many times over the years by women who have taken time out to raise a family and then come to a point in their lives where they want to ‘sort themselves out’ and ‘focus on me again.’
Many of the mothers I speak to don’t want to return to the career they had before having children for various reasons and are unsure of what to do next, what career will work for them and feel lost in all the advice and information available.
There are 3 things you can do to gain clarity as a mum in this situation.
- Contact a career coach. A career coach will help you identify the right role for you and then help you make the transition into your new role. Find one you can work with, get on with and who will be sympathetic to your needs. Not all career coaches are the same.
- Invest in yourself. There are lots of career related courses out there that you can book onto, even online courses are a good starting point. Invest in a good book such as ‘If Not Now, When?: How to Take Charge of Your Career’ by Camilla Arnold to get you started.
- Examine your core skills. Take time to identity what you enjoyed about your career to date, acknowledge your core values and look at your transferable skills, this will give you confidence and clarity, so you can start approaching companies regarding part time or flexible jobs. Try to find clarity in what you feel you have lost and this will help you going forward.
